Tips To Take Better Care Of Your Handmade Garments

Handmade garments stand the test of time if you take care of them. You spent a lot of time sewing the clothes. You remove every single wrinkle and gently hang them to make sure they look great when worn. But if you don’t take care of them properly, they won’t last long. Below are some tips that can help you take better care of your handmade duds.

Prewash well

Instead of throwing your clothing into the cold wash cycle, you should first prewash them. Throwing them away will cause them to shrink considerably.

For most knits and wovens, we suggest that you prewash them with lukewarm water and then dry on medium settings. If your clothing is made out of silk or wool, skip the pre-wash step.

Don’t watch too frequently

Generally, it’s better to pass your garments through fewer wash cycles. It will make your garments last longer, in addition, help you save money on your water and detergent.

Don’t overdry

It’s not a good idea to dry your garments on high settings or for long durations. You may find it tempting to go higher but know that it will make your garments fall apart sooner than you think.

Overdrying may cause your clothing to shrink in addition to damage the fabric.

Fold or Hang Your Garments

When the dryer is done, make sure you take out your clothing and hang them up. Fold the stretchy garments and hang the woven ones. Letting your garments sit in the dryer for several days will ruin them. So, it’s better to get rid of this habit as soon as possible.

If you don’t put your garments in a closet, be sure to choose another place that is not exposed to direct sunlight, as some types of fabric break down if left under direct sunlight. Silk is one of them.

So, follow these tips and your garments will stay in good shape for a long time.
